Freestall barns are becoming the most popular choice of livestock housing facility in the dairy industry today. With that comes the need for more readily available water and in our Wisconsin climate there needs to be a way to provide that water to the animals in all conditions.
When using the "cost per cow' analysis for determing the value of constructing a new facility it is important to determine not only the initial input costs but also the long term costs of operation.

Considering 80% of milk is water, your choice of waterers should be one of the most important decisions you make in designing and building your barn.
Studies have shown that fresher, cleaner water is preferred by livestock and when made available can and will improve your herds milk production.
The Ritchie Valve System
With Ritchie's valve and float system, depending upon your water pressure we can provide up to 33 gallons per minute of flow rate.
TAKE A LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLE
With 50psi of water pressure, we can produce 20 gpm flow, which in turn in our largest unit, the Watermaster 1200 will fill from completely empty to full in just three minutes! If six dairy cows are drinking at one time, each can consume two gallons of water per minute, meaning in a one minute time period they will all consume roughly 12 gallons.
Therefore as they were all drinking the valve was refilling the trough at 20 gallons per minute, filling faster than six cows could drink from it!

The Watermaster 1200 is the preferred choice of the largest dairy farms in Wisconsin and Illinois. The Unit is 144 inches long, 24 inches wide and 24 inches tall. With a total capacity per unit of 250 dairy cows it has the ability to provide water to a large group of animals. The Watermaster 1200 holds 60 gallons of water, half that of the competition, this means that the water is going to stay fresher, due to turning over more often. As we all know water is a valuable resource and keeping our waterers clean is imperative to good animal health.

The Watermaster 90 is a unit that works exceptionally well when you have a location of less than 10 feet. The unit is 90 inches long, 33 inches deep and 22 high. It has a trough capacity of 30 gallons and can water up to 150 dairy head. With the lower trough capacity you will find the same energy saving traits as the Watermaster 1200 and 600, yet allows more space for your herd to drink than the 600 and fits on those end stalls of 8-10 feet, filling them out more completely. This unit also comes standard with constant flow, which at the operators descretion can be used to keep a continual flow of water going in to the trough at all times. It is used mostly in the dairy industry as a trainer but can also be utilized for added freeze protection. Although generally speaking, due to the amount of consumption in a freestall barn freezing water is a non issue.
The WaterMatic family of waterers are our all poly waterers that function in the same manner as the WaterMasters except for on a smaller scale. The WaterMatics can be used in specialty areas throughout a freestall barn where the capacity of a larger unit is just not needed.
Shown above are the (left to right) 150S, Watermatic 1000, WaterMatic 150, WaterMatic 300, and WaterMatic 100. For more specific details on the WaterMatic line click here to be redirected to the Ritchie website. Or return to our main products page.

If you have an extremely cold freestall barn or are concerned about units freezing on the ends near doors that remain open, take a look at installing the CatteMaster units in those locations. The Cattlemasters are poly exterior units with a 304 grade stainless steel trough that has heating elements mounted to the bottom of it. Those heating elements are thermostatically controlled and will keep the trough completely free of ice do to the convection of heat throughout the trough. They are available in a 48", 84" and a 144" version. 120v or 240v.

Long term savings
The following Watermaster units can save you money in operational costs vs. the competition.
Because these four units hold considerably less water than the competition, you will save money everytime you need to do the following:
